SUMMARY:"Market Design with Distributional Policies: Lessons for the Philippines?"
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING ON FRIDAY\, May 15\, 2026. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vazquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\, featuring M. Bumin Yenmez\, Ph.D.\, a Professor of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). Before joining WUSTL\, he worked at Boston College\, Carnegie Mellon University\, and Microsoft Research. He holds a PhD from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from Caltech\, and serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Theory.\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: Market design started with the famous work of Gale and Shapley (1962) and has reshaped various markets such as school choice\, kidney exchange\, and college admissions. More recently\, distributional policies such as affirmative action have become a central focus of the literature. In this lecture\, I give an overview of this literature starting with policies based on reserving seats for protected groups (Hafalir\, Yenmez\, and Yildirim\, 2013). Such reservation systems have been implemented at the national level in Brazil\, Chile\, and India\, and were used to allocate vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States.\n\nThe Philippines has its own tradition of affirmative action policies — including reservations for indigenous peoples\, persons with disabilities\, and other marginalized groups — and market design offers principled tools for evaluating\, refining\, and implementing such policies. I will conclude with recent advances that formalize distributional objectives through diversity functions and distributional preferences\, and discuss their potential application to Philippine allocation problems.\n\n📝 Please register using the links below or by scanning the QR codes in the poster:\n 📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/4m5fs4vr\n Zoom: https://tinyurl.com/bddsmr3r \n\n👀 We’d love to see you there!\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook

Wi\nHIV/AIDS & STI Expert\nTeam Lead\, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs)\nDepartment of Global HIV\, Hepatitis\, and STI Programmes\, World Health Organization\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #284\nMay 15\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nMay Gamot Ba Para Di Ma-Infect sa HIV?\nPre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)\n\nIn the contemporary landscape of global public health\, the paradigm of HIV prevention has undergone a transformative shift from purely behavioral interventions to a robust\, biomedical framework centered on pharmacologic prophylaxis. As we navigate the complexities of ending the HIV epidemic\, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis\, or PrEP\, has emerged as a cornerstone of our preventive armamentarium. In this week’s episode\, we will have a nuanced discussion on pharmacological profiles of tenofovir-based regimens\, specifically focusing on the inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase as a primary mechanism for preventing viral replication following potential exposure. While the science of PrEP is grounded in rigorous clinical trials and pharmacokinetic data\, its success relies heavily on the clinical acumen and empathetic communication of frontline providers. It is no longer sufficient for specialists alone to manage these regimens. Rather\, the decentralization of PrEP delivery into primary care\, pharmacy-led initiatives\, and nursing consultations is essential to mitigate the incidence of seroconversion within vulnerable populations.\n\nWe will also discuss the critical clinical eligibility criteria\, the importance of baseline and longitudinal renal function monitoring\, and the evolving landscape of long-acting injectable formulations versus traditional daily oral dosing. In addition\, we will address the systemic challenges of adherence and the sociocultural barriers that often impede equitable access to these life-saving medications.\n\nOur speaker is Dr. Teodora Elvira C. Wi\, an HIV/AIDS & STI expert. She is the Team Lead\, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs) from the Department of Global HIV\, Hepatitis\, and STI Programmes\, World Health Organization HQ. Join us in this intellectual discourse that will help ensure that the promise of a future without new HIV infections becomes a tangible reality.

DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the “Lecture and Performance with the Mabuhay Singers”\n\nThe Mabuhay Singers\, the quintessential sextet behind the well-loved Filipino folksongs\, kundiman\, danza\, balitaw\, and pop music\, continued to capture the interest of scholars and historians for the timeliness of their music and their willingness to interface with their loyal radio listeners and young people.\n\nFormed in 1958 by Manuel P. Villar of Mabuhay Records Corporation\, the group was originally composed of members of the two trios\, Tres Rosas (Carmen Camacho\, Nora Hermosa\, and Raye Lucero) and the Lovers Trio (Ador Torres\, Floro San Juan\, and Bert Legaspi)\, whose voices perfectly blended in what is known as unison singing form. Eventually\, other singers joined the group.\n\nGet the chance to know more about the contribution of the Mabuhay Singers to Filipino culture on May 13\, 2026; 1:00 – 5:00 P.M. at the UPD CMC Auditorium.\n\nThis event is jointly organized by the UPD College of Media and Communication and the College of Music and in partnership with the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UPD-OICA).\n\nSource: UP College of Media and Communication Facebook

SUMMARY:“Bank Performance Indicators and Climate Change in the Philippines”
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING ON TUESDAY\, May 12\, 2026. 10:00 AM\, via virtual lecture.\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Seminar featuring UP School of Economics Associate Professor Marjorie C. Pajaron\, Ph.D.\, who is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC).\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: This paper explores the potential impacts of the physical risks associated with climate change on bank indicators in the Philippines using an innovative provincial longitudinal data from 2012 to 2024\, which was constructed using a myriad of government datasets. The results\, which suggest non-linear and heterogeneous effects of climate-induced risks on bank variables\, support the existing green financing endeavor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas\, and climate-related sustainable development goal (SDG 13) and targets. The findings also confirm those found in the literature that both banks and depositors adjust to climate risks.\n\nKeywords: Bangko sentral ng Pilipinas\, Green financing\, climate change\, bank performance\n\nJEL classification: C1\, G21\, G5\, Q5\n📝 Please register using the link below or by scanning the QR code in the poster:\n📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/yws9s8ut \nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook

SUMMARY:War\, Speed\, and Care: Korean Society through the Lens of Literature
DESCRIPTION:[SPECIAL LECTURE] War\, Speed\, and Care: Korean Society through the Lens of Literature\n\nAbstract:\nThis lecture examines how Korean literature reflects the historical and social conditions of modern Korea through three key themes: war\, speed\, and care. The Korean War has been revisited in Korean literature for decades\, and Korea’s enduring militaristic culture continues to evoke the sense of a war that has never fully ended. At the same time\, the struggle for survival has accelerated many aspects of Korean society\, producing a culture marked by speed and pervasive anxiety. These dynamics often appear in modern Korean fiction\, where characters struggle either to keep pace with shifting social expectations or to resist them.\n\nThe tempo and narrative form of these works frequently mirror the experience of social acceleration itself. Against this backdrop of violence and pressure\, contemporary Korean literature raises another question: what forms of care might allow us to imagine different ways of living together today?\n\nSpeaker:\nDr. Wookyung Jeong is a lecturer at Incheon National University and Kyung Hee University. She received her PhD in Modern Korean Literature from Seoul National University\, where her dissertation examined the literature of Ch’oe Yun and the poetics of translation. Her research interests include translation studies\, multilingual literature\, women’s writing\, and care. Recently\, she has been exploring Korean novels\, poetry\, and webtoons translated into French and English. \nREGISTRATION LINK (Zoom): https://up-edu.zoom.us/…/register/kWv0MUwLQBi2Sm7V4cxznA\nYouTube Live Link: https://www.youtube.com/live/tYfiiI3PnMQ\n\nThis online lecture is co-hosted by UP Center for International Studies\, Seoul National University Asia Center\, and UP KRC with support of the Korea Foundation-한국국제교류재단.\n\nSource: UP Korea Research Center Facebook

SUMMARY:"Obeying in Advance: Duterte's Election and the Onset of the Philippine Drug War"
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING NEXT FRIDAY\, May 8\, 2026. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vazquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\, featuring UPSE Asst. Prof. JC Punongbayan\, Ph.D.\, whose research covers macroeconomics\, economic history\, education\, and development. He has authored two books: False Nostalgia: The Marcos “Golden Age” Myths and How to Debunk Them\, published in 2023 by Ateneo Press and Twin Plagues: How Duterte and Covid-19 Wrecked the Philippine Economy\, which will be published by Penguin Books SEA in June 2026. In 2024\, he received The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Award for Economics.\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: I use event-level data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) to estimate the impact of Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs” on political violence in the Philippines. Constructing a balanced panel of 80 provinces observed weekly from January 2016 through June 2017\, I estimate event-study and difference-in-differences models that compare drug-war-tagged fatalities against a within-country placebo: non-drug-war political violence (battles\, explosions\, and non-drug violence against civilians).\n\nThe headline finding is that the placebo series exhibits no discontinuity around either the election or the inauguration\, while drug-war fatalities show a sharp\, immediate spike. The violence increase is therefore specific to the drug war\, rather than reflecting general conflict trends\, ACLED source-coverage changes\, or other simultaneous shocks. As a precondition for this comparison\, I show that the relevant event date is the May 9 presidential election\, not the June 30 inauguration. I discuss identification challenges\, including anticipation effects\, the endogeneity of ACLED’s tagging\, and the absence of cross-regional treatment variation.\n\n📝 Please register using the links below or by scanning the QR codes in the poster:\n📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/35nbv3xf\n Zoom: https://tinyurl.com/34v83ff3\n\n👀 We’d love to see you there!\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook

SUMMARY:Health Updates Webinar #283 "Ano Ang Responsibilidad ng Paaralan sa Kalusugan ng Mga Bata?"
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar283 \n  \nWebinar #283\nMay 8\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno ang Responsibilidad ng Paaralan sa Kalusugan ng Mga Bata?\n\nPresenter:\nDr. Benjamin P. Sablan\, Jr.\nProfessor and Head\, Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics\nDepartment of Pediatrics\nUP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #283\nMay 8\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno ang Responsibilidad ng Paaralan sa Kalusugan ng Mga Bata?\n\nThe school-age years\, generally demarcated as the developmental epoch spanning from six to twelve years of age\, represent a critical physiological and psychosocial transition that fundamentally shapes the long-term health trajectory of the individual. During this period\, the confluence of rapid neurocognitive maturation and expanded social exposure necessitates a sophisticated\, multidisciplinary approach to healthcare that transcends the traditional boundaries of acute clinical intervention.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will explore the nuances of school-age health through the lens of evidence-based clinical surveillance and proactive health promotion. We will bridge the gap between tertiary pediatric expertise and the frontline delivery of care by providing a comprehensive overview of the epidemiological shifts and developmental milestones that define this unique demographic. We will elucidate the complex interplay between biological determinants and environmental influences\, emphasizing the importance of longitudinal monitoring for metabolic homeostasis\, immunological priming\, and anthropometric development. In addition\, the webinar will delve into the socio-ecological determinants of health\, exploring how frontline healthcare workers can empower laypeople and caregivers to foster environments that promote nutritional optimization\, physical activity\, and psychosocial resilience.\n\nAs we integrate scientific rigor with practical clinical application in this webinar\, we will seek to establish a unified paradigm for school-age wellness that leverages the collective expertise of the entire healthcare ecosystem. Our speaker is Dr. Benjamin P. Sablan\, Jr.\, who is a Professor and the Head of the Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics of the Department of Pediatrics\, UP – Philippine General Hospital.\n\nJoin us in refining our collaborative strategies to safeguard the health and well-being of the next generation by ensuring that every encounter within the healthcare system serves as a catalyst for lifelong health literacy and vitality.
