SUMMARY:UP Vargas Museum Family Day
DESCRIPTION:Family Day at the UP Vargas Museum happens this Saturday!\n\nRegister to join\, bit.ly/UPVMFamilyDay.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites families with children aged 6 to 10 years old to join us for a Family Day event on Saturday\, 9 August 2025\, from 9:30 AM to 12 NN. Family Day at the Vargas Museum will bring children closer to nature with activities including gardening and zine-making. Teacher and illustrator Patti Ramos will join us during the art activity sessions.\n\nWe encourage everyone to wear comfortable clothing and to bring their tumblers or water bottles.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum Family Day is the culminating activity for our “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” project. “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2025. Aligned with this year’s theme\, “Kalahok sa Nagbabagong Kalikasan\,” the project aims to develop expanded pedagogical materials that weave art practices\, sustainability\, and the museum’s social practice project\, which is our ongoing Gardens and Homesteads initiative. It positions art institutions like the museum as a site for gathering and sharing. It also foregrounds education as the core thrust of the Vargas Museum alongside curation and research.\n\n“Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the Arts and Culture Festival organized by the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UP Diliman OICA). It is an umbrella project for the second phase of the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) for its Manila case study.\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

SUMMARY:Criteria of Validity — UPD x Oxford Philosophy Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:🌟 MEET THE SPEAKER FOR CRITERIA OF VALIDITY 🌟\n\n📚 Curious minds\, mark your calendars — the conversation continues!\n\n🔔 Introducing\, a major voice in Philosophy of Law 🔔\n\n👤 Meet the Speaker\n⚖️ Tom Adams is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law as well as a Tutorial Fellow at St. Catherine’s College. He works in philosophy of law\, as well as on theoretical aspects of constitutional and administrative law.\n\n📝 Lecture Abstract\n⚖️ This talk revisits the debate between inclusive and exclusive legal positivism\, arguing that the question around which it is founded – about whether morality can function as a condition of legal validity – obscures a more basic and fundamental truth about the nature of law: that the norms composing a legal system’s criteria of validity have a formal as opposed to substantive nature. Recognising this\, I argue\, helps to clarify some important aspects of the relationship between the ultimate norms of any legal system and its constitution. It also helps to explain away much of the debate between exclusive and inclusive positivism.\n\n💬 Don’t miss this rare opportunity to engage with some of the most influential minds in contemporary philosophy.\n\n📌 Registration is now open!\n\n👉 Sign up here: ⁦https://bit.ly/UPDxOxfordRegistrationForms⁩\n\nIf you have any concerns and inquiries\, kindly email Project Head Mika Gana at msgana2@up.edu.ph or Asst. EMELITA O. LAVILLA\nChief Dietitian\, Dietary Department\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #261\nOctober 24\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nSobrang Katabaan… Okay Ba?\nRisks and Management of Obesity\n\nThe escalating global prevalence of obesity presents a critical public health challenge in the Philippines. Current epidemiological data underscore a concerning trajectory\, with adult obesity and overweight rates surging over the past decades.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, our esteemed panel of experts will disseminate evidence-based updates on the intricate pathophysiology of obesity. We will explore its role as a pivotal driver of cardiometabolic syndrome. We will focus on conditions such as insulin resistance\, atherogenic dyslipidemia\, and hypertension\, which collectively amplify the risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular disease. We will also discuss the nuances of risk stratification relevant to the Filipino demographic\, incorporating parameters beyond anthropometric measurements\, such as visceral adiposity and emerging biomarkers of chronic low-grade inflammation. In addition\, we will critically evaluate the continuum of management strategies by encompassing intensive lifestyle modification protocols (with an emphasis on nutritional biochemistry and tailored physical activity)\, pharmacologic agents\, and the contemporary indications for bariatric surgery.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Nemencio A. Nicodemus\, Jr.\, who serves as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UP College of Medicine. He is also an endocrinology consultant at the Division of Endocrinology\, Diabetes\, and Metabolism\, UP-PGH Department of Medicine\, as well as the 2026 President of the Philippine College of Physicians. Delivering her reaction to his presentation is Prof. Emelita O. Lavilla\, who is the UP-PGH Chief Dietitian.\n\nJoin us to learn how to contribute to a national paradigm shift in the prevention and control of this pervasive metabolic dysfunction. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:The Cuyonon Lexicon for the Intertidal Zone: From TUBÓG (Tide Pool) to ATÓL (Stone Tidal Weir)
DESCRIPTION:[Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series] \nCUYONON [cyo]: The Cuyonon Lexicon for the Intertidal Zone: From TUBÓG (Tide Pool) to ATÓL (Stone Tidal Weir)\n24 October | Friday | 01:00 PM\nPilar Herrera Hall\nAldrin P. Lee\, PhD\nProfessor\nUP Department of Linguistics\n\n— Linggo ng KAPP —\n\nThe tenth installment of the 2025 Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) will be on the Cuyonon [cyo] lexicon for the intertidal zone. This PILLS lecture is a part of the 2025 Linggo ng Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pilosopiya Celebrations from 20-25 October 2025.\n\nABSTRACT\nThis study builds upon an earlier exploratory work on Island Linguistics in the Philippines (Lee\, 2022) and focuses on the lexicon of the intertidal zone\, a defining feature of small islands and a significant food source for island/coastal communities. Specifically\, this work zeroes in on Cuyonon (ISO 639-3 CYO)\, an island language spoken primarily in Cuyo Islands\, and presents an expanded list of terms in this language related to the intertidal zone\, highlighting significant ontological distinctions (e.g. tubóg ‘tide pool’ vs. bagumbón ‘tidal flat’) and relevant conceptual systems (e.g. enasán ‘intertidal zone with aquatic vegetation’\, bakulód ‘[fringing] coral reef system’).\n\nThe documentation also includes lexicalized forms related to human activities in the intertidal zone and communal strategies and/or cultural practices associated with this whole range of intertidal pursuits. One such communal practice is the building or restoration of atól ‘stone tidal weir’\, a traditional fish trap made by stacking rocks and/or reef limestones to form a dam/fort-like structure. While stone tidal weirs have long been attested in different parts of the world including some areas in the Philippines (e.g. in Panay Island as discussed by Zayas\, 2019)\, this study seeks to provide a novel description of the stone tidal weir using an indigenous ontological frame (in this case\, Cuyonon).\n\nSince intertidal system is a key domain in Island Linguistics\, a more comprehensive lexicon for the intertidal zone could serve as an additional eliciting material or baseline documentation tool for probing island (and to some extent\, coastal) languages in the Philippines (e.g. Island Language Questionnaire in Lee\, 2022). To a broader extent\, this study contributes to a scholarship that foregrounds local epistemologies and the role of indigenous languages in articulating traditional knowledge systems.\n\nReferences:\nLee\, A.P. SUMMARY:FriSem: Concentration and Union Activity in Local Labor Markets in the Philippines: Estimates and Implications
DESCRIPTION:📣 HAPPENING THIS FRIDAY\, October 24\, 2025. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vasquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\n🧠📚💡Join us and find out whether union activity is lower in areas where a few firms dominate employment. Using data from the Philippines\, the research finds that in more concentrated labor markets\, there are fewer new unions\, fewer collective agreements\, and lower union membership.\n\nThese results challenge the idea that union activity is stronger where large firms generate higher profits. Instead\, they highlight how concentrated employment makes it harder for workers to organize.\n\n📝 Please register using the links below or by scanning the QR codes:\n 📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/yc69js29\n 📍 Zoom: https://tinyurl.com/5fz9vb3s\n\n👀 We’d love to see you there!\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook
