SUMMARY:UP Vargas Museum Family Day
DESCRIPTION:Family Day at the UP Vargas Museum happens this Saturday!\n\nRegister to join\, bit.ly/UPVMFamilyDay.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites families with children aged 6 to 10 years old to join us for a Family Day event on Saturday\, 9 August 2025\, from 9:30 AM to 12 NN. Family Day at the Vargas Museum will bring children closer to nature with activities including gardening and zine-making. Teacher and illustrator Patti Ramos will join us during the art activity sessions.\n\nWe encourage everyone to wear comfortable clothing and to bring their tumblers or water bottles.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum Family Day is the culminating activity for our “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” project. “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2025. Aligned with this year’s theme\, “Kalahok sa Nagbabagong Kalikasan\,” the project aims to develop expanded pedagogical materials that weave art practices\, sustainability\, and the museum’s social practice project\, which is our ongoing Gardens and Homesteads initiative. It positions art institutions like the museum as a site for gathering and sharing. It also foregrounds education as the core thrust of the Vargas Museum alongside curation and research.\n\n“Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the Arts and Culture Festival organized by the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UP Diliman OICA). It is an umbrella project for the second phase of the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) for its Manila case study.\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

SUMMARY:Health UPdates Webinar #260 "Sari-Saring Sore Eyes: Solving the Conjunctivitis Puzzle"
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar260 \n  \nWebinar #260\nOctober 17\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nSari-Saring Sore Eyes: Solving the Conjunctivitis Puzzle\n\nPresenter:\nDR. RUBEN LIM BON SIONG\nProfessor and Chairperson\nDepartment of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences\nUP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital\n\nReactor:\nDR. REGINALD ROBERT G. TAN\nCornea and Refractive Surgery specialist\nClinical Associate Professor\,\nDepartment of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences\nUP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #260\nOctober 17\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nSari-Saring Sore Eyes: Solving the Conjunctivitis Puzzle\n\nThe ophthalmic landscape in the Philippines necessitates continuous professional development\, especially regarding ubiquitous and highly transmissible ocular surface diseases such as conjunctivitis\, locally known as “sore eyes.” While often considered a self-limiting ailment\, recent localized outbreaks\, influenced by environmental factors\, population density\, and evolving pathogen profiles\, including persistent adenoviral strains and opportunistic bacterial species\, underscore the critical need for updated\, evidence-based management protocols.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will bridge the knowledge gap between primary care diagnostics and advanced ophthalmological interventions by offering a comprehensive\, post-pandemic perspective on this recurrent public health challenge. Our distinguished panel of experts will dissect the complex etiologies of acute and chronic conjunctivitis by moving beyond basic viral and bacterial classifications to address less common but potentially sight-threatening forms\, such as Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and refractory allergic subtypes. In this episode\, we will provide an in-depth review of advanced differential diagnostic tools\, optimizing the selection of topical antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents\, and judicious utilization of corticosteroids in the presence of corneal involvement. We will also explore emergent treatments and discuss the long-term sequelae of severe conjunctivitis by examining how persistent ocular surface inflammation can compromise the integrity of the corneal epithelium\, potentially leading to chronic dry eye disease or indications for lamellar keratoplasty.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Ruben Lim Bon Siong\, who is the Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the UP College of Medicine and at the Philippine General Hospital. Our reactor is Dr. Reginald Robert G. Tan\, who is a practicing cornea and refractive surgery specialist and is also a Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the UP College of Medicine and at the Philippine General Hospital.\n\nJoin us in learning how to execute effective infection control strategies and provide accurate patient counseling to mitigate community-level transmission\, especially in high-risk environments like evacuation centers and clinical settings. Let us all safeguard visual acuity and improving overall public eye health outcomes!

SUMMARY:ROOTED SOLUTIONS: A Public Forum on Nature-based Solutions for Flood Management
DESCRIPTION:GeoHazards International\, together with the UP College of Engineering and GeoThink\, present to you ROOTED SOLUTIONS\, a Forum on Nature-based Solutions for Flood Management on October 17\, Friday\, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM (Philippine Time) delivered via ZOOM Webinar.\n\nThis is also brought to you by National Research Council of the Philippines Division XII (Earth and Space Sciences)\, Philippine Association of Landscape Architects\, Philippine Environmental Science Association\, Inc.\, UP Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology\, UPLB Environmental Biology Division\, Institute of Biological Sciences\, UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management\, Batangas State University – TNEU ARASOF\, Mangrove Warriors\, and the UP National Engineering Center.\n\nFlooding has become one of the most pressing climate-related hazards in the Philippines\, with severe impacts on coastal communities\, urban centers\, livelihoods\, and infrastructure. The situation is worsened by climate change–induced sea-level rise\, stronger typhoons\, and storm surges\, which threaten both lives and economic productivity.\n\nIn recent years\, flood control projects have become highly controversial\, not only due to questions on their long-term effectiveness but also because they have been identified as a major source of corruption in publicly funded infrastructure programs. Costly\, hard-engineering solutions such as dikes and seawalls often fail to deliver inclusive\, sustainable\, and transparent protection for communities.\n\nThis has renewed interest in Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) as viable\, cost-effective\, and community-driven alternatives. By working with natural ecosystems—such as restoring mangroves\, wetlands\, river corridors\, and green spaces—NbS can mitigate flooding and coastal hazards while generating multiple co-benefits\, including biodiversity conservation\, livelihood support\, and climate adaptation.\n\nThis public forum seeks to bring together experts\, government\, academia\, and local stakeholders to discuss how NbS can be integrated into national and local disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) frameworks and move towards policy recommendations that institutionalize these approaches.\n\nThe forum aims to present evidence and global/local practices on NbS as effective measures against flooding and coastal hazards\, showcase the role of mangroves and other ecosystems in strengthening community resilience\, explore how NbS can be applied in urban settings as alternatives or complements to traditional flood-control infrastructure\, and generate policy recommendations for integrating NbS into national and local DRRM and climate adaptation frameworks.\n\nTo register\, kindly scan the QR Code from the pubmat or you may visit https://bit.ly/RootedSolutions2025\n\nThis is a free Forum.\n\nFor queries\, you may reach us through the UP NEC Engineering Information Division at nec_info.upd@up.edu.ph\n\nThank you.\n\nSource: UP National Engineering Center Facebook

SUMMARY:The Single Filipina: Blazing Trails And Redefining What It Means To Be A Woman
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Asuncion Miteria Austria Professorial Chair Lecture\n\nThe Single Filipina: Blazing Trails And Redefining What It Means To Be A Woman\nby Samantha Erika N. Mendez\, PhD\, RPsy\n\nAbstract:\nThis lecture tackles how always single women who do not have children challenge the prevailing heteropatriarchal norms of gender\, marriage\, and family that remain to be the social expectation\, despite global and local statistics showing a decline in marriage\, and an increase in singlehood. By living what is considered non-normative lives and failing to meet the gold standard of success for women in becoming wives and mothers\, these women are subject to social pressures to conform\, negative stereotyping\, stigmatization\, and marginalization.\n\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Mendez shares how the Filipino single women from her research sample experienced and responded to this. Furthermore\, she talks about how they have paved variegated paths to a meaningful life and successful womanhood beyond the traditional roles of wife and mother\, redefining and expanding the definition of successful and meaningful womanhood in the process.\n\nThe lecture ends with a discussion on the different ways that modern Philippine society can become a safe and inclusive space that can accommodate\, support\, and celebrate not only women considered traditionally successful in their roles as wives and mothers\, but also\, and most especially\, the single women who are blazing the trails and redefining the metrics for successful womanhood and meaningful lives in this modern world that we live in.\n\nPlease join us for the Asuncion Miteria Austria Professorial Chair Lecture of Dr. Samantha Erika Mendez this 17 Oktubre 2025 (Biyernes)\, 4:30 n.h. – 7:30 n.g.\, at Lagmay Hall Room 304\, UP Diliman and FB Live.\n\nThis is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Land\, Story\, and Design: Cultural Geographies of Care and Decolonisation
DESCRIPTION:📣HEO/GEO LECTURE SERIES (October 2025)📣\n\nYaw Ofosu-Asare on landscape\, decolonisation and everyday design\n\nIn The Four Seasons of Ethnography (2014)\, scholar and writer Sarah Amira de la Garza asserted that a Eurocentric perspective has insinuated itself to the wisdom traditions of local communities everywhere in ways that insist on domination\, superiority and ownership. Providing a ‘rich tapestry’ and culture-specific contexts to emphasize lived experiences\, scholar Yaw Ofosu-Asare employs storied-ethnography as a qualitative methodology that finds kindred affinity to postcolonial theory and participatory research towards “centring and valuing the narratives of those traditionally marginalized in scholarly research” (2025\, p. 10). Through counter-acts\, storied ethnography and creation-centered ontologies\, there is an active refusal in the “erasure of lifeworlds” (Gagnon\, 2024\, p. 100).\n\nThe Heo/Geo Lecture Series presents a lecture titled Land\, Story and Design: Cultural Geographies of Care and Decolonisation from Dr Yaw Ofosu-Asare from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University on 17 October 2025\, Friday at 5:30PM (Philippines Standard Time / 7:30PM AEST) via Zoom.\n\nThe talk explores the geography of design as lived practice\, showing how communities inscribe memory\, resilience\, and identity into landscapes through storytelling\, ritual\, and everyday design. Reading from his most recent book African Design Futures (2024)\, Ofosu-Asare centres the narrative of Efua from Edina\, a coastal town in Ghana\, to illustrate how coastal life\, market spaces\, and communal rituals embody forms of environmental care and spatial knowledge. These ideas may find echoes in the Philippines\, where Indigenous practices\, local markets\, and rituals also root people’s relationship to land and sea.\n\nAlongside this\, Dr Ofosu-Asare draws on Decolonising Design in Africa to pose a provocation: in seeking to decolonise\, how do we avoid creating new hierarchies of knowledge? Together\, these perspectives invite us to see landscapes not only as sites of ecological management but also as cultural geographies where futures are imagined and lived.\n\nYaw Ofosu-Asare is a Ghanaian designer\, educator\, and researcher based in Australia whose work bridges decolonial design\, critical pedagogy\, and African futures. He is the author of Decolonising Design in Africa: Towards New Theories\, Methods\, and Practices (Routledge\, 2024) and African Design Futures: Decolonising Minds\, Education\, Spaces\, and Practices (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2024). With a PhD in Education\, his research explores the intersections of Indigenous knowledge systems\, storytelling\, and visual communication as tools for liberation and transformation.\n\nCurrently he is a Lecturer in Communication Design at RMIT University\, where he guides students in connecting theory and practice through industry-partnered studios and critical approaches to design pedagogy. Alongside my teaching\, Dr Ofosu-Asare designed for grassroots organisations\, educational institutions\, and global social change movements\, blending community-based design with speculative thinking. He also contributes to projects on climate justice\, disability inclusion\, and cultural sustainability. His work is rooted in a deep commitment to equity\, memory\, and creative reimagination.\n\nThe Heo/Geo Lecture Series is a monthly lecture given by academic scholars\, field-based geography practitioners\, members of the local community\, and spatial justice advocates to share their knowledge- and practice-based research undertakings. Jointly presented by the UP Department of Geography and the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS)\, the Heo/Geo Lecture Series which previously underwent several iterative rebranding positions geography as a discipline that not only straddles the realms of natural/physical and social sciences\, humanities\, political ecologies\, regional and area studies\, GI technologies and geospatial storytelling\, it is also a vibrant and convivial space that welcomes multiplicities and plural voices. The name Heo/Geo is itself an accommodation to the various understandings\, meanings and pronunciations of geography in its indigenous and vernacular forms and the Anglicized name that has since been adapted in the local lexicon.\n\nDr Ofosu-Asare’s lecture is also presented by the Human Geography (HUG) and Media\, Literary Geographies and Geohumanites (MELANGE) research groups of the UP Department of Geography and is in line with the SDG #4 (Quality Education) of the United Nations.\n\nTo participate in the lecture\, please register through this link: https://tinyurl.com/5bvfkrjn\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook
