SUMMARY:Health UPdates Webinar #228 "Isipang Hapag-Kainan": Diet and Endometriosis
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar227 \n  \nWebinar #228\nFebruary 28\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nIsipang Hapag-Kainan\nDiet and Endometriosis\n\nPresenter:\nDR. MIKAELA ERLINDA M. BUCU\nClinical Associate Professor\, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility\nDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\nReactor:\nDR. GILDA G. MARTINEZ\nProfessor 11 (retired)\, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility\nDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #228\nFebruary 28\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nIsipang Hapag-Kainan\nDiet and Endometriosis\n\nEndometriosis\, a chronic and often debilitating gynecological condition\, profoundly impacts the lives of numerous individuals\, presenting a spectrum of symptoms that demand comprehensive clinical understanding. In this week’s episode\, we will discuss the complex mechanisms underpinning endometriosis\, exploring the ectopic implantation and proliferation of endometrial tissue\, and the subsequent inflammatory cascade that contributes to pain and other associated symptoms. Diagnostic modalities such as transvaginal ultrasonography and MRI\, alongside the gold standard of laparoscopic visualization and histological confirmation\, will be thoroughly examined. It is important for us to distinguish endometriosis from other causes of pelvic pain\, necessitating a meticulous clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis.\n\nIn addition\, we will explore the efficacy and safety profiles of hormonal therapies\, such as combined oral contraceptives\, progestins\, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists\, alongside the role of analgesics in pain management. Surgical options will also be presented\, ranging from conservative laparoscopic procedures to radical hysterectomy.\n\nBeyond the clinical aspects\, we will address the psychosocial impact of endometriosis\, recognizing the significant burden it imposes on patients’ quality of life. An often overlooked but crucial factor in the management of endometriosis is the role of diet. Emerging research suggests that dietary modifications can significantly influence the inflammatory processes associated with the condition. Specifically\, a diet rich in fruits\, vegetables\, and omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms\, while a diet high in red meat\, processed foods\, and trans fats may exacerbate them. We will discuss the potential benefits of dietary interventions\, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to patient care.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Mikaela Erlinda M. Bucu\, who is a Clinical Associate Professor of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our reactor is Dr. Gilda G. Martinez\, who held the position of Professor 11 (until her retirement) at the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility of the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.\n\nJoin us in understanding how to support those affected by endometriosis so we can improve their outcome and overall well-being.

SUMMARY:Writing the Life of a European Cultural Mediator: Bringing Barbara Bray (1924-2010) Out of the Archives
DESCRIPTION:DEL-dalan 2025: Seminars on ‘European’ Languages\, Literatures and Cultures\n\nWriting the Life of a European Cultural Mediator: Bringing Barbara Bray (1924-2010) Out of the Archives (Prof. Dr. Pascale Sardin\, University of Bordeaux Montaigne\, France)\n\nTo register\, please click on the following link: https://forms.gle/QTcQRTMKEzD4ndsTA\n\nABSTRACT: Barbara Bray (1924-2010) was an English woman of letters who translated some hundred novels\, plays\, and essays from French to English and was Marguerite Duras’s preferred translator. She also collaborated with some of the most prestigious directors and playwrights of the 20th century — Harold Pinter\, Samuel Beckett\, Joseph Losey\, and Franco Zeffirelli. In addition\, she produced shows for BBC radio\, was a journalist and critic\, and cofounded a bilingual theatre company.\n\nIn this presentation\, I propose to reflect upon what motivated me to write a literary biography of this woman of letters. I propose to highlight\, in doing so\, the role Bray played as a cultural mediator in the Anglophone and Francophone literary fields in the second half of the 20th century. I will focus on how she made European cultural products circulate inside and outside European borders\, and the kind of “transtextual” work this involved\, thus putting forward her different skills\, as well as the influence she had in cultural transfers of ideas.\n\nPRESENTER’S BIO: Pascale Sardin is Professor of English Literature and Translation Studies at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne University in France\, where she teaches in the English and Theatre departments. She is the author of several books on Samuel Beckett\, and has edited two volumes of the journal ‘Palimpsestes’ (Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle). She has just completed a literary biography of Barbara Bray\, entitled “Barbara Bray\, A Woman of Letters: Translator\, Radio Producer\, Scriptwriter\, Critic\, and Theatre Director” (Routledge).\n\nSource: UPD Department of European Languages Facebook
