SUMMARY:LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN
DESCRIPTION:THIS MARCH AT PAROLA: LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN\n\nTwo millennia ago\, the first sator square was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii\, among pumice and volcanic ash. Since then\, many other excavations revealed these same Latin words—SATOR\, AREPO\, TENET\, OPERA\, ROTAS—engraved on doorknobs and wall fragments\, etched on boxes\, and even skulls. From the debates\, we learn that perhaps the cryptogram had magical or incantatory properties\, that it functioned as a mystical lock. \n\nLikewise\, LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN mark our claims to home. In this collaborative project\, each artist receives a sator-type square based on keywords that they use to personally represent the locale of their birth\, their dwelling\, and their artistic practice (while suppressing specific information). Released\, our creations move porously between text (the grid) and art (the visual forms). We unlock place and memory in this manner: gathering letters to unleash images\, meeting in symbol to step out into the light of day.\n\n______\n\nLULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN opens this March 7\, 2024 at Gallery One of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.\n\nMarch 7 | 2 PM | Artist Talk\nMarch 7 | 4 PM | Exhibit Opening\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n\nWalk-in guests are warmly welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays\, 9 AM – 4 PM. For bookings\, visit bit.ly/ParolaVisitorsForm or email us at cfagallery.upd@up.edu.ph\n\nSee you!\n\nSource: UP Fine Arts Gallery Facebook

SUMMARY:Matereality
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING THIS MARCH AT PAROLA: Matereality 💗\n\nThe exhibition’s title\, Matereality\, comprises three words: mater\, reality\, and materiality. This play on words encapsulates the curator’s intention to shake the frame that defines women’s lives\, particularly that of mothers\, by gathering and presenting diverse visual languages created by women artists. The exhibition was first held at Artinformal in Greenhills in April 2022. This exhibition marks its second iteration\, which brings together some of the artists from the previous edition along with new ones. In the proposal\, the curator Annie Pacaña wrote\, “[the second iteration] tackles themes of work-life-art balance/counterbalance/imbalance that artists who are mothers experience daily.” The theme brings to mind our inclination to control time to improve our quality of life.\n\n______\n\nMatereality opens this March 8\, 2024\, at the Multipurpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.\n\nMarch 8 | 5 PM | Opening reception\nMarch 8 | 7 PM | Outdoor projection\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n\nWalk-in guests are warmly welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays\, 9 AM – 4 PM. SUMMARY:Punlaan: Conservations and a Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Punlaan: Conversations and a Picnic\nA Gardens and homestead launch event\nstarts at 2:00 pm\n26 March 2024\, Tuesday\nVargas Museum\nRegister for free to join\, bit.ly/UPVMGardens\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites the public to join us in Punlaan: Conversations and a Picnic\, a roundtable discussion and picnic for the launch of the museum’s Gardens and homesteads project on 26 March 2024\, Tuesday\, at 2:00 pm. Museum curator Tessa Maria Guazon will be joined by artists Nathalie Dagmang\, Issay Rodriguez and food justice advocate and farmer Tonio Flores in the discussion. The conversation and picnic will center around the collective practice of gardening and concurrent issues of sharing communal resources. Participants are encouraged to register prior to the event and submit photos of their home gardens regardless of form or scale through bit.ly/UPVMGardens. These photos will be part of the participatory discussion during the event.\n\nGardens and homesteads: Reflections on a museum’s holdings charts the journey of the Vargas Museum collection from Jorge B. Vargas’s family compound in suburban Mandaluyong to its relocation to a museum inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. The project reframes the transfer of objects in a collection through the lenses of property and land. It will serve to reflect on ideas of private ownership and public access. Gardens and homesteads consider notions of habitation enacted through the movement of objects and material culture and how the transfer of seemingly inanimate things is ferried through human exchange and relations. It also places in perspective the continuing relevance of the museum as an institution not only for learning but also for community building\, whereby its audiences and viewers are positioned as active agents in the public sphere. The project also announces the Vargas Museum as host institution for the second phase of the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) research project\, led in Manila by curator Tessa Maria Guazon with collaborators artists Alma Quinto and Nathalie Dagmang.\n\nThe project is part of the initiative of the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UPD-OICA) and the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival (DACF) 2024 with the theme “Pamamalagi at Pamamahagi.”\n\n_______\n\nAbout our partner artists\n\nNathalie Dagmang\n\nNathalie Dagmang engages the fields of contemporary art and anthropology in her art practice. Through collaborative and artistic research projects\, she explores ethical questions about representations of cultures\, the nature of community engagement\, and forms of social intervention. SUMMARY:“The Future of a Filipino Icon\, the Jeepney\, and the Role of Manufacturing”
DESCRIPTION:The Political Economy Program (PEP)\, UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies\, is organizing a roundtable discussion (RTD)\, “The Future of a Filipino Icon\, the Jeepney\, and the Role of Manufacturing” on 8 April 2024\, 9:00 am – 12 noon via Zoom. Slots are available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, but participants are encouraged to register.\n\nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nThe Roundtable\n\nHeadlining the RTD are Francisco Motors and Sarao Motors\, Inc.\, who will present their proposals for jeepney modernization.\n\nSeeking to promote an inclusive and Filipino innovation-driven Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP)\, the roundtable aims to:\n\nShine a light on the jeepney manufacturers’ proposals and plans in response to the PUV Modernization Program\n\nExplore the possibility of tapping more affordable clean and green technologies for the jeepney in the transition to a low or zero carbon emission future;\n\nPromote collaboration among manufacturers\, government\, university research and development community\, jeepney drivers and other stakeholders on the issue of jeepney modernization; and\n\nDevelop a set of recommendations for government agencies and financial institutions.\n\nPresenters\n\nMr. Teodoro C. Mendoza\nScience Director\, Community Legal Help and Policy Center\n\nMr. Elmer Francisco\nOwner and CEO\, Francisco Motors\n\nAr. Leonard John Sarao\nOperations Supervisor\, Sarao Motors\, Inc.\n\nOther experts from the UP Diliman research and development community have been invited as speakers/reactors.\n\nBackground\n\nA legacy of the post-war era\, the first jeepneys were made by reconfiguring military vehicles left behind by the departing American troops into open-aired public utility vehicles. Leading this effort of providing an affordable and accessible mode of transportation for working-class commuters were domestic manufacturers\, notably\, Francisco Motors and Sarao Motors. Since then small makers have joined the industry\, making the jeepney a ubiquitous presence in the country’s not only in the urban landscape\, but also in the rural areas where public transportation is scarce.\n\nToday\, this heritage vehicle that has become a Filipino icon may soon be a thing of the past. The Philippine government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP)\, launched in 2017 aimed at making public transport system “safer and more efficient\, convenient\, and reliable”\, has sought to phase out the traditional jeepneys\, replacing them with imported bigger\, airconditioned electric vehicles – each estimated to cost between P1.3 million to P3 million. Noteworthy\, while the PUVMP’s aims are laudable\, it is short on options that would allow Filipino manufacturers to modernize the jeepneys partly by tapping homegrown innovations and thus provide a path for jeepney drivers to own their own vehicles\, without losing their autonomy.\n\nOrganizer\n\nThe PEP was established in 2019 to undertake problem-solving\, evidence-based research aimed at promoting sustainable\, equitable\, and innovation-driven development policies\, programs\, and practices. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines policy and technology innovation as well as multi-stakeholders’ participation and collaboration. Learn more about PEP and download their publications for free.
