SUMMARY:Health UPdates Webinar #263 "1M Pinoys Displaced by Typhoon Uwan: Paano Ang Kalusugan Nila?"
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar263 \n  \nWebinar #263\nNovember 14\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n1M Pinoys Displaced by Typhoon Uwan: Paano Ang Kalusugan Nila?\n\nPanelists:\nDR. TEODORO J. HERBOSA\nSecretary\nDepartment of Health\n\nDR. ARTURO M. PESIGAN\nFormer WHO Representative to Yemen\nInternational Expert on Health Emergencies\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #263\nNovember 14\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n1M Pinoys Displaced by Typhoon Uwan: Paano Ang Kalusugan Nila?\n\nThe recent catastrophic impact of Typhoon Uwan\, resulting in the internal displacement of over one million Filipino citizens\, presents an acute challenge to the nation’s public health infrastructure that necessitates immediate\, evidence-based intervention and strategic multi-sectoral coordination. This critical displacement crisis extends far beyond the immediate humanitarian requirement for shelter\, triggering complex secondary health sequelae rooted in the principles of disaster epidemiology and environmental health.\n\nThe massive convergence of populations in temporary evacuation modalities generates high-density settings\, dramatically increasing the transmission potential for communicable diseases\, including but not limited to acute diarrheal illnesses\, arboviral infections such as dengue\, and severe acute respiratory infections. In addition\, the compromised integrity of water\, sanitation\, and hygiene (WASH) systems critically exacerbates this risk profile\, demanding synchronized clinical and community-level preventative strategies.\n\nMoreover\, the disruption of continuity of care represents a significant threat to long-term population morbidity and mortality. The systemic failure within the healthcare supply chain\, coupled with the structural damage sustained by frontline medical facilities and the concurrent victim status of healthcare personnel themselves\, creates an environment where patients reliant on chronic disease management\, specifically those with non-communicable diseases like hypertension\, diabetes mellitus\, and complex oncological conditions\, are subject to perilous treatment interruptions. The specific vulnerability of pediatric\, geriatric\, and obstetric populations in such austere settings must also be rigorously addressed\, particularly concerning maternal and child nutrition security. Finally\, this event has precipitated a widespread psycho-social crisis; the sustained psychological trauma resulting from catastrophic loss of domicile\, livelihood\, and existential security mandates the immediate integration of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services into the immediate response architecture.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will have two panelists: Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa of the Department of Health\, who is a distinguished authority in trauma and disaster medicine\, and Dr. Arturo M. Pesigan\, who is the former WHO Representative to Yemen and is also an international expert on health emergencies. They will offer invaluable local and global perspectives on resilience and health systems stabilization during protracted crises.\n\nJoin us as we learn how to foster robust health system resilience in the face of escalating climatic threats. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:Punla at Binhi: Butoh Workshop Series | An Onsite Workshop-Performance
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to experience the visceral world of Butoh through the workshop-performance “Sisa Reimagined” by Sasa Cabalquinto\, a contemporary reimagining of Sisa from Noli Me Tangere\, merging Butoh\, physical theatre\, and ritual performance.\n\nDate: November 19 (Wednesday)\, 1:00 – 5:00 PM\nVenue: ASEAN Hall\, UP Asian Center\, University of the Philippines Diliman\nPresented in partnership with: UP Asian Center\nRegister at: https://bit.ly/punlaatbinhi\n\nThe workshop is FREE and open to ages 16 and above with no necessary background in Butoh and performing arts.\n\nThis Manila leg focuses on embodied inquiry and creative process: how Butoh becomes a space for memory\, transformation\, and post-colonial reflection. Please note: this workshop is NOT an instructional and codified teaching of a dance “form” or technique\, or a choreography class. It intends to find resonance between Butoh and Filipino embodied experience\, and aims for sharing of a Butoh-informed process and embodied inquiry drawn from years of personal study and immersion in Butoh practice.\n\nLet us move\, listen\, and plant new seeds of connection and creativity in UP Community!\n\nThis project is organized by the UP Asian Center in partnership with the Kapwa Movement in partnership with Goethe-Institut through the Performance Ecologies platform. SUMMARY:When Great Powers Evade Great Responsibility: Uncovering Corruption through Law and Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Who profits when communities drown? Who will answer for the floods?\n\nWhen Great Powers Evade Great Responsibility: Uncovering Corruption through Law and Accountability\n\nThe devastation caused by corruption in our flood control systems has left countless Filipino communities submerged. Recent investigations allegedly revealed that nearly P100 billion worth of flood control projects were funneled to a select circle of contractors\, reportedly tied to public officials. Behind the scenes: ghost projects\, defective infrastructure\, alleged kickbacks\, and extravagant lifestyles starkly contrasting the suffering of those they were meant to protect.\n\nAs protests grow louder\, investigations deepen\, and criminal complaints inch forward\, the call for truth\, justice\, and systemic reform becomes impossible to ignore.\n\nJoin us as we dissect the recent flood control corruption scandal and confront the urgent demand for legal and fiscal accountability. This is more than a conversation; it’s a movement for transparent and just governance.\n\n📅 20 November 2025 | 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM\n📍 UP BGC Auditorium\, 4th Floor\, Henry Sy Sr. Hall\n🔗 Register here: https://bit.ly/UPCOL_Colloquium\n📌 Registration is open until 17 November 2025\n\nPresented by the UP College of Law BGC Evening Class of 2027\, co-presented by the UP College of Law\, and the UP Law Student Government.\n\n(Photo Credits: Francisco Galarza\, Pexels; EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid\, Flickr; Patrickroque01\, Wikimedia Commons; AusAID\, Wikimedia Commons)\n\nSource: When Great Powers Evade Great Responsibility Facebook

SUMMARY:“Trends toward increasingly dewatered tailings for tailings storage and disposal are leveling up to Global Industry Standards”
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines Department of Mining\, Metallurgical\, and Materials Engineering (UP DMMME) proudly announces the third installment of its Monthly Lecture Series on Tailings Storage Facilities.\n\nThe series opened in September with “Management of tailings: Employing best available processing technologies and safe storage in tailings facilities – environmental effects\,” where Prof. Emmanuel U. Pornillos\, DOST Balik Scientist\, emphasized that facility failures often arise from inadequate design\, insufficient monitoring\, and weak understanding of material behavior. He urged the adoption of best available technologies to achieve safety and sustainability in tailings management.\n\nBuilding on these foundations\, the October session\, “From Fundamentals to Strategies: Understanding Tailings Properties for Safe Disposal and Storage\,” explored the physical\, geotechnical\, and chemical characteristics that define tailings behavior from slurry consistency to filtered and dry-stacked tailings. Prof. Pornillos underscored that no two tailings are the same and that effective management depends on understanding each site’s mineralogy\, rheology\, and geochemistry. The lecture also discussed the role of water management\, liner systems\, and post-closure monitoring\, while challenging the audience to pursue a Philippine Tailings Laboratory for research and innovation aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).\n\nBuilding on these insights\, the third lecture will shift focus to the industry’s accelerating move toward thickened\, paste\, and filtered tailings – the most dewatered forms now considered best practice and their alignment with Global Industry Standards for safety\, water recovery\, and environmental stewardship. Participants will learn how these technologies improve stability\, reduce footprint\, and advance progressive rehabilitation across diverse climatic and geological settings.\n\n🗂 Lecture Title:\n“Trends toward increasingly dewatered tailings for tailings storage and disposal are leveling up to Global Industry Standards”\n📅 Date: November 24\, 2025 (Monday) ̶N̶o̶v̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶1̶0̶\,̶ ̶2̶0̶2̶5̶\n🕘 Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 NN\n📍 Venue: FLUOR Lecture Room\, 2/F DMMME Building\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n💻 Hybrid Event: Simultaneously via Zoom\n\nThe session is open to students\, engineers\, industry practitioners\, regulators\, and researchers seeking to deepen their technical\, environmental\, and regulatory understanding for a safer\, globally aligned mining industry.\n\n🔗 Registration Link: https://bit.ly/DMMME-TailingsStorage-Lecture3\n\nUP DMMME invites colleagues from academe\, government\, industry\, and civil society to continue this dialogue and help shape the country’s path toward safer\, science-based tailings management.\n\nSource: UP Department of Mining\, Metallurgical\, and Materials Engineering Facebook
