SUMMARY:Unfolding (언폴딩) Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Unfolding (언폴딩)\nInhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim\nPreview on 14 December 2024\, on view until 22 February 2025\n1/F Galleries\nUP Vargas Museum\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum\, together with the Ministry of Culture\, Sports\, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea\, the Korea Arts Management Service\, and the Fund for Korean Art Abroad\, presents the exhibition of works by artists Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim organized by Dominic Mangila. Unfolding (언폴딩) considers the experiences of two artists who embody othered identities in a society largely devoted to masculine ideals. Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim unpack vignettes of life in South Korea as members of the LGBTQIA+ community in film and video works\, and through art that engages labor and marks processes.\n\nThrough them\, they summon the worlds of prisons and places of incarceration juxtaposed with spaces of freedom and gaiety– to discover and mark a social identity that refuses to settle with the laws and sanctions of a patriarchal nation.\n\nUnfolding (언폴딩) will be on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum starting 14 December 2024. Write to vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph for details and related information. The museum is located inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays\, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.\n\nFor updates on events\, exhibitions\, and advisories check our socials on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter @upvargasmuseum.\n\n__________________________\nAbout the artist\n\nInhwan Oh\n\nInhwan Oh (b. 1965) is Associate Professor at the Department of Painting of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. His participatory works and site-specific projects contextualize a particular space and time and seek to dismantle the cultural codes formed in the relationship between the identities of individuals and groups within a patriarchal society. Some of his more recent solo exhibitions were held at the Smith Gallery of Davidson College in North Carolina (2019)\, BAIK ART in Los Angeles\, California (2019)\, and Bongsan Cultural Center\, South Korea (2018) He recently participated in group exhibitions at the Arsenale in Venice\, Italy (2019) and at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon\, South Korea (2018). He was a recipient of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and SBS Foundation’s Korea Artist Prize in 2015.\nKyungmook Kim\nKyungmook Kim’s (b. 1985) video art\, documentary\, and narrative films expand the form of cinema by exploring the precarity of the marginalized such as homosexuals\, transsexuals\, sex workers\, and North Korean defectors. He made his directorial debut with Me and Doll-playing in 2004. Some of his other notable films include his Things Trilogy (2005-2014)\, A Cheonggyecheon Dog (2008)\, and Grace Period (2015). His films have been selected for and received awards in international film festivals such as the Venice Film Festival the BFI London Film Festival\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among his awards include the Idea Generation Grant of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019)\, The Association of Korean Independent Film & Video’s Indie Filmmaker of the Year Award (2014)\, and Muju International Film Festival’s Best Director Award (2014).\n_________________________\nAbout the museum\n\nThe University of the Philippines Jorge B. SUMMARY:Social Well-being among Older Migrants in Non-Highly Urbanised Areas of South Korea
DESCRIPTION:[PUBLIC LECTURE] Social Well-being among Older Migrants in Non-Highly Urbanised Areas of South Korea\n\nSpeaker: Johanna O. Zulueta\, Ph.D. (Faculty of Sociology\, Toyo University)\nThis public lecture is co-hosted by UP KRC and UP CIS (UP Center for International Studies) in celebration of the UP CIS’ 25th anniversary.\nVenue: UP CIS Classroom C\, G/F Benton Hall\, UP Diliman\nDate & Time: 17 February 2025 (Monday) 10AM\n\nAbstract:\nThis study examines the experiences of migrants in South Korea as they reach their older years. In particular\, this research focuses on women from the Philippines who arrived in South Korea beginning in the early 1990s\, and are currently living in the country’s non-highly urbanised areas (rural and/or semi-rural areas). Most of these women came to the country as marriage migrants to Korean men living in these regions. Based on qualitative data gathered through interviews and fieldwork in selected areas in Chungcheongnam-do\, Jeollabuk-do\, and Gyeonggi-do in 2023-2024\, this study analyses ageing\, migration\, and social well-being from feminist and transnational perspectives.\n\nSpecifically\, this study explores these migrants’ perceptions of their ageing process outside their countries of birth\, as it relates to their own perceptions on social well-being—particularly its social and cultural aspects—as long-term migrants and members of so-called multicultural families (damunhwa kajok) in South Korea. It is argued here that the ageing experience of migration is gendered and intertwined with one’s own cultural and social capital. In addition\, language and communication\, one’s status of residence\, citizenship\, spirituality and religion\, and the presence or absence of family are also deemed significant. This study aims to shed light on the challenges that older female migrants in South Korea are facing as they navigate their own ageing along with societal changes in their host country.\n\nBionote:\nJohanna O. Zulueta is Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Sociology of Toyo University\, Japan. She received her A.B. (Social Sciences) from the Ateneo de Manila University and her Ph.D. (Sociology) from Hitotsubashi University. She does research on migrations in East Asia\, looking at issues related to ethnicities\, military basing\, gender and families\, citizenship\, and aging. Her recent monograph is titled: Okinawan Women’s Stories of Migration: From War Brides to Issei (Routledge\, 2022). She held visiting appointments at Thammasat University\, University of Malaya\, Taylor’s University\, University of South Australia’s Hawke Research Institute\, and Seoul National University Asia Center.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nOriginal image source on poster: https://www.jejudomin.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1063 (artwork done by UPKRC)\n\nSource: UP Korea Research Center Facebook

SHIELA CO-SEE\nEntrepreneur and Patient\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #227\nFebruary 21\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nBleeding Beyond the Norm\nAno Ang Dapat Mong Malaman?\n\nAbnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common gynecological concern affecting women across various age groups\, significantly impacting their quality of life. Characterized by deviations from the normal menstrual cycle in terms of regularity\, frequency\, duration\, or amount of bleeding\, AUB presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for healthcare professionals.\n\nThis week’s episode will begin with a foundational understanding of normal menstrual physiology\, establishing a baseline for recognizing deviations that constitute AUB. We will learn about the different types of AUB\, including heavy menstrual bleeding (formerly menorrhagia)\, intermenstrual bleeding\, irregular bleeding\, and postmenopausal bleeding\, among others. We will discuss the importance of thorough patient history and physical examination in evaluating AUB\, emphasizing the role of specific diagnostic tools such as transvaginal ultrasound\, endometrial biopsy\, and hysteroscopy when clinically indicated. We will also cover the various potential causes of AUB\, ranging from structural abnormalities like uterine fibroids\, polyps\, and adenomyosis\, to hormonal imbalances\, coagulation disorders\, and even malignancies. In addition\, this educational activity will explore the range of treatment options available for AUB\, encompassing both medical and surgical approaches. We will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment modality\, empowering participants to make informed decisions in collaboration with their patients.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Teresa Diana B. Bongala\, who is an Assistant Professor II and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. She is also a senior consultant at the St. Luke’s Medical Center – Global City. Our reactor is Mrs. Shiela Co-See\, who is an entrepreneur and who has graciously agreed to share her patient journey and insights.\n\nJoin us in enhancing your understanding and management of abnormal uterine bleeding\, and help address the psychosocial impact of AUB on women’s lives. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!
