SUMMARY:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER: A Solo Exhibit of NICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT
DESCRIPTION:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER\n\nA Solo Exhibit of\nNICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT\n\nSINING MAKILING GALLERY\nD.L. Umali Hall\, UPLB\n\nOpening on 9 May 2023\nExhibit runs until 30 June 2023\n\n————————-\n\nInspired by her surroundings in Los Baños\, Laguna\, Nicolei Buendia Gupit presents to us in her third solo show\, Imprinted in the Water\, a range of mediums and processes that highlight the impact of human activities on water resources.\n\nBy using prints of man-made objects\, Gupit highlights the ways in which we have come to rely on water resources for our own needs\, often at the expense of the environment and other human and non-human life. The wet pigment that she uses to dye her surfaces suggests the fluidity and mutability of water\, and the need for us to consider our effect on this vital resource. Its subdued palette emanates an ominous atmosphere that conveys the gloomy reality we face. Connecting this with images of marine life skeletons\, she concocts impressions of the devastating ramifications of pollution and overfishing on aquatic ecosystems. Uprooted trees hint at the destruction of natural habitats\, while flaky tin roofs allude to the consequences of climate change and natural disasters in the lives of marginalized Filipinos yearly. She also incorporates bottle-shaped resin works that carry paper money inside them—probing pieces that challenge viewers to consider the value we place on water and the attendant effects of its privatization.\n\nThrough her artworks\, Gupit challenges viewers to consider their own relationship with water and the ways in which our actions can have far-reaching consequences. She invites us to think about the imprint that we are leaving on the natural world\, and to consider how we might work to create a more sustainable and equitable future for all. MARICAR B. LIMPIN\nImmediate Past President\nPhilippine College of Physicians\n\nSynthesis & Closing Remarks:\nDR. STELLA MARIE L. JOSE\nHead\, Office of Expanded Education and Training\nUP Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nMay 19\, 2023 (Friday) 12nn\nWebinar #146\nVaping : “Totoo bang Hindi Harmful?”\n\nVaping is the colloquial term for using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). They come in cool and attractive forms that are meant to entice the youth to take up the habit of vaping. Vaping has been marketed as a less harmful form of “smoking” or as an aid for quitting. But neither of these are true.\n\nWhat do we know about vaping and the use of ENDS?\n\nENDS contain varying amounts of nicotine and harmful emissions. These are harmful to both users\, and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand. Some products claiming to be nicotine-free (ENNDS) have been found to contain nicotine.\n\nThere are a number of harmful effects of nicotine consumption. In children and adolescents\, these can affect brain development and lead to learning and anxiety disorders. Some recent studies suggest that ENDS use can increase the risk of heart disease and lung disorders. Nicotine exposure in pregnant women can have similar consequences for the brain development of the fetus.\n\nENDS use can also expose non-smokers and bystanders to nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Aside from this\, electronic delivery systems have also been linked to a number of physical injuries\, including burns from explosions or malfunctions\, when the products are not of the expected standard or are tampered with by users.\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, Dr. Maricar B. Limpin\, a leading pulmonologist from the Philippine Heart Center and the immediate past President of the Philippine College of Physicians\, who is also globally known as a staunch anti-tobacco advocate\, will shed light on how electronic cigarettes negatively impact on health and can cause harm. We have also invited a patient who has experienced the negative effects of vaping and would like to share her experience with others. Finally\, the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose\, who is the PGH Head of the Office of Expanded Education and Training.\n\nKeep abreast with the latest from your credible online community. Join us as we learn about the effects of vaping and its impact on our health.\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
