“Bad Words” in the Study of Philippine Politics

INVITATION TO A PUBLIC LECTURE
We are pleased to invite you to a public lecture titled “Bad Words” in the Study of Philippine Politics by Professor Marco Z. Garrido of the University of Chicago, happening on 18 July 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the CSSP Wellness Center, 3rd Floor, Pavilion 1, Palma Hall, UP Diliman.
Prof. Garrido, author of The Patchwork City: Class, Space, and Politics in Metro Manila (University of Chicago Press 2019), is a sociologist whose work critically engages with the lived experience of inequality and political life in the Philippines.
In this talk, he explores the use of “bad words” such as political dynasty, patronage, and corruption in describing Philippine politics, and how these terms have become naturalized. He examines the epistemic consequences of their continued use and what is at stake in challenging them.
